The survey for people who make websites 2009

A List Apart - The survey for people who make websites 2009Whether you call yourself a user experience consultant, web developer, or content strategist; whether you design customer flows, buttons, or brands; no matter what title you hold as a full- or part-time web professional, your work shapes our future and ought to command the world's respect. But we won't win that respect without understanding, and we can't hope for understanding without data and the knowledge it reluctantly yields to the patient hand and steady eye.

For the good of our profession, take the survey and promote it, it's really useful to all of us at the end.

Check the findings of 2008 survey.

Designing With Web Standards 3rd Edition

The first edition of Zeldman's book DWWS was my first step on the road of web standards, it's published 2003 , I read it 2005.

Blue Zeldman part of the coverToady after web 2.0 and after web standards is more familiar, alot of things has changed and a bunch of new standards and technologies are out there, Zeldman's 3rd edition of DWWS will cover most of those topics.

  • Explore HTML 5, CSS3, and the future of markup.
  • Learn how to put your content in front of the public and keep it there, regardless of how technologies and browsers may change in years to come.

The new mini site of the book, includes an embedded web font that work even on IE.

Findings from the ALA Survey, 2008

I believe it's really useful for every person in the web industry to check this survey out, it has alot of details about titles, salaries, regions, satisfaction, skills, blogs & a very useful comparison between freelancers & employees + also a useful comparison between type of organizations, like partners in companies, employees & startups owners etc...

It also shows that web persons in Africa are more satisfied & get's more salary than Asia & South America.

A must read to the very last bit of it.

Show us your first web site

I've been re-organizing my work page today, I passed by really old web sites I've done through my life, it's really fun to check old work and laugh.

Oldest pointAt the beginning of my career I was doing flash sites only, that's all what I could do these days, it was early days of the release of Flash 5 and every body was talking about it, ofcourse I was thinking that Flash is better than HTML sites and that HTML sites was going to disappear in few years :))

I have worked with flash since 99 but unfortunately I lost those very old sites, the oldest one I have here, is point studios first version, released 2003 according to Way back machine.

Now don't be shy and show us your oldest site, comment it below.

More personal point, more employed me

Have any one noticed the new redesign of stopdesign it's there since 22 Jan but I didn't noticed it until yesterday, I don't know how, it looks like I'm alot outdated, and I have to refocus again.

I've been thinking to redesign point also to look more personal but unfortunately didn't have much time lately.

B comad logo Refilling process I'd like to inform you also that I'm now working at B comad starting from yesterday, it's a new advertising agency in Egypt, but it has 2 old branches in Kuwait & Dubai, I like the work environment so much, and the creative director is great.

Here is our first day there, we have to pass by the process of emptying our heads and refilling it with there Blue thoughts. I'm the one with the big blue head, if you see me in the streets this days don't be shocked by the blue head I got now :))

Unfortonatley I didn't like there blue thoughts so much, and I couldn't afford to live directed by a creative director more than one week, yes he is awesome, but web principles are alot diffirent, can't be considered as a magazine Ad.

37signals drops IE 6 support

Yesterday 37signals announced that they will drop IE 6 support starting from August 15, 2008 so they could achieve better experiences.

Supporting IE 6 means slower progress, less progress, and, in some places, no progress.

Phasing out support for IE 6 across all 37signals products on August 15, 2008

This move some how reminds me when Steve Jobs announced he will drop Power PC's and use Intel, every body was waiting for the G5 PowerBook etc... so what to do is to sacrifice something to gain other alot of things.

As an HTML/CSS coder I understand how much pain they pass through to get there interfaces work with IE 6, and I understand to achive some experiences they don't have other choice than to drop IE 6 support.

It will be nice if there interfaces doesn't crash on IE 6 only some options and additions don't work, but if there's no way but to crash the interface onIE 6 they don't have other choice, only a message stating the cause of the problem and showing the links of IE 7, FireFox & Safari, will be nice, I'm sure 37signals understands that perfectly.

Most intelligent person in the world (Me)

You might be surprised of the title, but what I meant really is the opposite, what I'm thinking? what I want to say? I want to say that every body think he is the most intelligent person in the world and that his opinion in any and every thing is the right one.

How do I know I'm not the most intelligent person out there?

What if I'm this person insisting on my opinion while it's wrong, how will I know it's wrong. I remember all this cases I fought for then after a long time I discovered maybe by chance that I'm totally wrong, if we are two arguing about something both of us 100% sure he is right, one of us has to be wrong, why not me? That's how I discovered I'm not the most intelligent person out there.

Why this is a big problem?

  1. If you think you are the most intelligent person in the world you will never try to learn or discuss and get convinced with different things, you will never get benefit of others experiences or elders advices, your knowledge will stop here.
  2. You might ruin your life or job by your ignorance.
  3. People will hate you.

I face this problem alot in meetings with clients to discuss there websites, my clients usually have no idea about websites or maybe a slight background, they started to say I want my main website color to be dark violet for example while I see that there type of business and targeted visitors will not like or get comfortable with this color, this is just an example it may get more complicated than that maybe your client tell you change the navigation place or structure.

Client level / Geek level = ResultIn this case I have to try to convince my client that this is better bla bla bla usually they don't get convinced so we get to a middle solution and you have to do it not to lose the job while you know that you could do this website alot better than this.

What to do now?

Always put a probability even if it's small that your opinion might be wrong. If it's your profession you're talking about decrease this probability if it's away of your profession and for example it's the first time you hear about this issue etc.. then increase this probability.

It may help to use the word "I think" or "I believe".

Well this is not what I do but I just thought to right about this because I think it's really an important issue that has to be solved, and by the way I'm not 100% sure that what I've just written is true :)

Happy Cog redesigned

Happy Cog logoThe old Happy Cog site was great but this new site is even greater I like it's sentence navigation very much it delivers the message just perfect, and it's typography, colors & layout are very nice.

Designed by Jason Santa Maria top illustration by Kevin Cornell who is well known by his ALA illustrations Daniel Mall for markup, CSS, PHP, JavaScript and Dan Cederholm set up the WordPress blog.

What do you expect when the best of the web industry minds get together to create this master piece, I hope web designers, developers and more importantly user experience designers learn from those giants how to make a web site.

International Liaison Group (ILG)

Since the WaSP introduced the forming of International Liaison Group (ILG) I was very interested to join this group of international Standardista's, because together we could help each others to reach the goal we all work for, which is a better web for all of us, we've been working together all this time since about May 13 2006 till now, and now finally it's announced I represent Egypt, and I hope I could deliver to the Egyptian web community the importance of complying the standards, I've been trying this since 2005 but now as we all together, it's even easier.

Thanks all ILG members for your support and sorry for being a lazy member, and special thanks to Molly who started this whole idea and by the way good luck Molly with your new position at Microsoft.
