Announcing ausedcar.net

ausedcar.net logoHello all! good morning to all of you, Today is the birth of our very own project ausedcar.net all it's meant to do is to be a directory of used cars where you can view cars by any search criteria like make, price & ofcourse country as well as you can add your car with it's details and your contact info for whoever is interested of your car.

So what's so special about this there is dozens of used cars directories out there?

  1. The first principle I put in front my eyes while designing this system is Less is more that means that this is only a used cars directory and it's nothing easier than viewing or adding cars you don't have to login and run through a questionnaire etc it's really so simple.

  2. If your privacy matters you may choose not to show your contact information instead a form will be shown to buyer so he can send you his contact info and a message.

  3. It's all AJAXed maybe a non technical person would not understand that, but it simply means you don't have to jump from page to page every time you request an operation like for example when you add a car or request a photo or contact info "Buy now" no refreshment to the page all in the same page, thanks to Mostafa Sobhy in that and in developing the whole back end system that's terrific Mostafa.

  4. You could follow new added cars by RSS it's a technology for fast tracking content without the need of viewing the whole site, many of you already know that.

For short ausedcar.net is not just a new cars directory like any one out there, it's user experience was perfectly designed to be friendly fun & easy.

Cross posted on ausedcar.net blog.

#100 post

Celebrating #100 post let me introduce to you a brief history of this blog.

This blog first post was on May 06, 2005 titled Tiger unleashed Since then I've been posting mainly about web standards, UX & best practices.

This blog first design was lunched on May 10, 2005, then the liquid add-on design lunched on August 20, 2005 then the zoom layout launched on July 21, 2005, you could see all those three designs through the styles panel of the old design, on November 01, 2006 point has been rebooted to this current design.

On July 28, 2005 Jeffrey Zeldman one of the well known web standards movement leaders and co-founder of the WASP, has added me on his Get your geek on list:

Point Studios may be the first web design studio in the Middle East to specialize in web standards. Founded by Abdelrahman Osama, the agency has worked with major clients including RA Sports and New Cairo Academy.

Here are some of my best posts at 2006

Thanks alot for all those who supports me and folks like me all around the world to make the web a better place, and I hope I'm pushing the favor back well

Rebooted

Hello all, most probably you are coming from the css reboot or the standards reboot, actually the new design to me is more a realign than a redesign I needed more space badly for my featured work, linkroll, blogroll & cartoon quotes, I also wanted to let the text be light on dark background as I think it's more comfortable on the eyes, the new design also more semantically marked up than the old one.

This new design is formed from 3 columns only the middle is elastic the other two has fixed widths the left column is fixed so that the logo and the navigation be with you wherever you go.

Ofcourse I faced some CSS problems to reboot that maybe I will discuss them technically through the next days but one of the cool ones is when an image width is more than the width of the content division which you are reading now, because the old design width was fixed I used to set the image width equal to the content division width but now as it's elastic the image width could be bigger, so the solution is #content img { max-width: 100%; height: auto; } this let the image width as it is unless the width of the container is smaller it will resize the image with it, to see that check this post.

Maybe some of you are surprised by the cartoon quotes, people who know me closely know that I love cartoons a lot and spend long times watching Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks cartoons, I always express events maybe sometimes my feelings by cartoon quotes.

I'm happy to announce the new Fast standardization service.

It's as simple as that send us your PSD file we convert it to Compatible, Accessible, easy to modify & fully standards compliant web page controlled by XHTML & CSS, in just few days and send it back to you, in return of relatively cheap price, but it must hold the word Standardized by Point studios.

If you want to apply more than one design to your site send us your 2, 3 or whatever you like PSD files holding the same content and we will handle the job for you, your visitors will be able to change the site style just the way you can change this site style right now from the choose style panel on the left bar.

Still don't know the benefits of complying the standards, check it out.

Zoom layouts update

I was away for about a month for some reasons and I just read Joe Clark's article Zoom layouts update I'm glad to be mentioned as one of the first few to apply Joe's zoom layout technique.

Joe commented on my link ( needs fine-tuning for overlapping layout components ) thanks Joe for pointing out the bug for me. It affects Safari only as far as I can see, the reason this bug appears is the negative margin values in the default style which I call it modern that affect other styles when switched to them.

As you can see I have one default style modern and two alternate new & zoom the margin in modern is #top { margin-top: -119px; } the negative values only the negative values affect the alternate styles when switched to them even if there is a rule that overwrite it like #top { margin-top: 0; } to fix the problem I have to overwrite it with a rule like #top { margin-top: -1px; } and maybe let the first object above #top push it one more px to the bottom.

I don't know if this is the best solution but it is one. Thanks a lot Joe and thanks all.

What is FRESH PX

Alright no body guessed what FRESH PX is.

As you know the number of blogs around the web are exploding there are over 20 million or maybe 50 million blogs out there and its increasing dramatically.

As you know also a blog is an affordable way for individuals to share there ideas and opinions, It is free while using blogger or WP and cheap while using MT etc…

But the missing side is DESIGN . Every blogger like to have a different look to his blog that reflects his personality also in an affordable way. If we are speaking about blogger which are the majority of blogs out there, blogger already have 30 fantastic designs, but aren’t 30 designs very few for this huge number of blogs I mean if you choose one of them your blog look will not be that different.

So we came up with the idea to create a blog templates store with low prices maybe 5$ or 10$ per template. FRESH PX is a mid point between web designers and millions of bloggers.

Point new style has just been liquefied

Point new style has just been liquefied. I have been working all night on turning Point new style to liquid and I’m done. Go on Test it and tell me what do you think. Switch to the new style from the Side bar -> Choose styles.

What is liquid layout?

Liquid or fluid layouts are expandable with the browser try resizing the browser width while on New style and you will understand what I mean.

New office

Point moved into a new office in garden city at one of those old buildings looking directly at El kasr El Einy street near to El Tahreer Square

The view from the office

Over the past week, I've been painting, moving, and assembling, creating a clean, comfortable space that Point calls home. I now sit above El kasr el einy street in a funky little office with lots of windows and incredible views over downtown near to El tahreer square.

Night view from here is terrific. I can't express how exciting having this new space is for me, and how much I love the new office, the building it's in, and the location.
